From Rooftops to Royal Palaces: Our First Stop in Spain

Arrival in Madrid

As we pulled up in the taxi on our journey from the airport, a beautiful Renaissance neo-Moorish style building was standing tall and proud with a tower at either end, making a statement against the Madrid skyline. Stepping out of the taxi, we were greeted by a uniformed doorman who helped us with our luggage and showed us to reception.

Settling into the Hotel

As we settled into the hotel, it dawned upon me just how beautiful the Riu Plaza España hotel is. Being situated on Gran Vía, the main shopping street with Mango and Zara on either side, it is a girl’s paradise!

The only compromise we had at this hotel was that we had a family room for four adults instead of two separate rooms because this offered a better price. The room was plenty big enough for us, with a queen-size bed and pull-out double bed, tea and coffee facilities, and a lovely modern bathroom. It had a huge window that overlooked Plaza de España square and part of the Palacio Real (Royal Palace).

A Rooftop Experience

It was now evening time, and we fancied something special. The 360° rooftop bar caught my eye. The view of Madrid all lit up, standing on the spectacular glass bridge stretching between two wings of the building, made it feel like we were walking on air. It was breathtaking— all of Madrid at our feet, looking out from every angle.

For a girl who does not like heights, I was proud of myself! I even got some lovely photos with my daughters. Just keep in mind that if you decide to visit the bar yourself, it can get very busy, so either be prepared to wait in a queue or pre-book. If you’re lucky enough to be staying at the hotel, like myself, you get FREE entry to the bar. If not, you’ll have to pay an entry fee.

After having a look around the bar, we stepped outside into the warm evening air and wandered around the streets of Madrid. It was now time to get some food and that well-deserved drink.

Evening Stroll and Dining Under the Stars

I sat at the table, watching the hustle and bustle of people leaving work, visitors, families, and friends meeting up at little cafés and bars, with tables spilling out onto the pavements. It made me think about how the Spanish people spend their warm evenings—enjoying each other’s company, watching the world go by, drinking, and dining under the stars. I love this. Time with my family, the pace of life, and the vibrant pavement culture.

A Delightful Breakfast

The following morning, we headed for breakfast at The Cervantes restaurant. We were greeted by courteous staff and shown to our table, where we were brought tea and coffee. I almost had to double-check because I could not believe the choice of food—from continental pastries, cold-cut meats, and a colorful array of fresh fruits. You could also order a cooked breakfast from the cooking stations and watch your food being prepared. This was a huge spread; there was something for everybody.

As we sat down to eat, my youngest daughter noticed that the next table had sparkling wine. Hey ho, I thought—it’s 5 o’clock somewhere! So off we went to find the Buck’s Fizz and sparkling wine station. What a nice way to start the day. Cheers!

Exploring Madrid and The Royal Palace

Breakfast finished, it was time to set off and discover vibrant Madrid, with its diverse architecture ranging from traditional to modern. It was actually quite fascinating because it started off cool first thing in the morning, but as we crept closer to The Royal Palace, the sun was rising higher in the sky, and the temperature started to get warmer.

We stood in front of The Royal Palace—it is the largest in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world. There are so many squares to wander through, with amazing fountains and monuments to take in. I even had some photos taken, which my husband always moans about but secretly loves looking at when we get home! Now that I am blogging, I have every excuse for a photo shoot. Love it!

A Refreshing Stop at an Irish Bar

En route to The Buen Retiro Park, which had been recommended to us, we needed a drink stop. Of course, around the next corner was The James Joyce Irish Bar. There was a smile on everyone’s faces—there’s an Irish bar in every city! The table on the pavement outside had our name on it.

A Peaceful Afternoon in Buen Retiro Park

Strolling through the park, we watched people on little rowing boats they had hired out on the artificial lake. The trees were just starting to change color to their autumn hues, and the sun was shining through them onto the path. It was a very peaceful and calming atmosphere.

Up ahead, we encountered the statue of the Fallen Angel—the only sculpture in the world dedicated to the devil, which sits 666 meters above sea level.

Sunset Relaxation at the Rooftop Pool

After a full day of discovering the beautiful city of Madrid, we jumped straight into the lift to the 21st floor. The swimming pool was surrounded by sun loungers with chic red umbrellas. With a drink in hand from the pool bar, it was time to relax from the bustling city. The sun’s rays reflected off the pool—it was time to take a dip and watch the sun go down.

Onward to Cuenca

The following morning, we jumped into a taxi to go to the train station. It was time for part two of our exciting adventure. City of Cuenca, here we come!
